Same Sex Marriage, Politics, and the Jesus Stick
"Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, 'Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.' But Jesus said to him, 'Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?'” -Luke 12:13-14   I have great sympathy for this “someone in the crowd.” I make Jesus into my judge and arbitrator all the time – especially when it comes to justice issues. And the funny thing about those justice issues is that Jesus always, I mean always, agrees with me.   Take same-sex marriage, for example. I’ve written about my theological defense of same-sex marriage – and I know Jesus agrees with me, because Jesus and I are tight.   So, you’d think I’d be ecstatic over President Obama’s support of
When Friends Turn Into Enemies: Our Pernicious Belief in Violence
Afghan soldiers. Photo: EPA   The worst thing one can do now is believe in violence. – René Girard Battling to the End, 125     The greatest danger facing humanity today is our belief that violence can produce peace. It’s a belief that threatens our future, and, indeed, our planet. At some deep level, we all know our belief in violence is flawed, and yet we remain faithful to it. Why?   Those were my thoughts as I read today’s New York Times article titled “As Trained Afghans Turn Enemy, a U.S.-Led Imperative Is in Peril.” It describes an incident of what the U.S. military is calling “green on blue” attacks – NATO trained Afghan soldiers turning on their NATO counterparts. First Sgt. Joseph Hissong awoke during
The Lorax, the Prophets, and the iPad
Adam discusses Dr. Seuss's book the Lorax.   Do you think the Lorax and the biblical prophets have the same structure to their message?   Adam agrees with the Apple executive who stated to the New York Times that unless costumers care more about working conditions in China than about a new iPhone, conditions in the factories will not change. Adam goes on to claim that we consumers should demand better working conditions in those factories. How do you think we should go about making those demands?   Do you agree with the prophets and the Lorax that if we don't care for the vulnerable members of our world, including our environment, that our society is in danger of dying? Why/Why not?   For more information,

The Raven Ratings

Once you know what the Raven knows, you’ll begin to see that some stories justify violence by
dividing the world up into us versus them, good guys and bad guys. Or they don’t get how inter-
related we are. They miss completely that our Selves are formed in relationships and our desires
are mimetic. The Raven calls these stories myths and gives them the lowest rating of 1 claw.

The Wicked Truth: When Good People Do Bad Things

wtruthThe Thinking Person’s Guide to The Wildly Successful Broadway Musical Wicked.

Employing political, social, and historical examples against the backdrop of the musical Wicked, The Wicked Truth explores the ways in which modern society is not so different than the mythical land of Oz, challenging the very framework of our culture, our understanding of Good and Evil, as well as our sense of right and wrong.
