I enjoyed this connection which in a way is obvious but still needs to be said in the face of so much materialism and consumerism. I especially enjoyed James Alison's material on prayer - still digesting it.
A further option is to look at the origins of Santa Claus - Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra of the 3rd Century. I had the good fortune of being asked to speak at a community Christmas gathering yesterday about St Nicholas. It was a secular event and the organising committee didn't want to go to the 'extremes' of a talk about Jesus or Santa Claus, so they suggested I look into Saint Nicholas. I discovered St Nic's story/legend is a good way into 'gift giving' as distinct from 'gift exchange'. Your thoughts helped me formulate that distinction around St Nic. Thanks
