Preshow Discussion
Raven Founder Suzanne Ross and Baseball Historian Peter Morris discussed the historical impact of Branch Rickey’s decision to call up Jackie Robinson and its dramatic interpretation by the Lookingglass Theatre.
Called “one of the most prolific living baseball researchers” by the New York Times, Peter Morris has written several books about the history of baseball, Baseball Fever, A Game of Inches, Level Playing Fields, But Didn't We Have Fun?, and Catcher: How the Man Behind the Plate Became an American Folk Hero. A presenter at many of the annual conventions of the Society for American Baseball Research, he is one of the initial recipients of their Henry Chadwick Award.

Mr. Rickey Calls A Meeting
Baseball’s Opening Day is one week away, and Branch Rickey, General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, will call up Jackie Robinson to break the color-barrier and play as the Major League’s first black ballplayer. If he does, Robinson will face loud and heated opposition from virtually every owner, manager, and player in baseball – and it won’t be a cakewalk with the fans, either. Who will be his allies if he makes the most daring and important play of his life?
Award-winning Ensemble Member J. Nicole Brooks (Black Diamond, Fedra: Queen of Haiti) directs this dazzling fast-ball script by Ed Schmidt. When 1947’s biggest African American personalities – baseball great-to-be Jackie Robinson, boxer Joe Louis, entertainer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, actor and activist Paul Robeson – meet, ideas and ideals clash and sparks fly, and America’s national pastime will never be the same.
Mr. Rickey Calls A Meeting is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Description
Lookingglass formed in 1988 when a group of ambitious college graduates created a process-driven theatre company and unique theatrical experience for the public. Their signature approach to developing plays involves long-term dedication to the development process, presenting work in a theatre with a configurable stage and seating that can change depending on the needs of the production. In 1992, the Lookingglass ensemble extended its vision to serve traditionally underserved populations by reaching out to Chicagoland’s diverse constituency through the creation of our education and community programs department. To date, they have produced 50 world premieres and have received 42 Jefferson Awards and citations and the 2011 Tony Award for Excellence in Regional Theatre.
The Lookingglass Theatre Company combines a physical and improvisational rehearsal process centered on ensemble with training in theatre, dance, music, and the circus arts. They seek to redefine the limits of theatrical experience and to make theatre exhilarating, inspirational, and accessible to all.
