Epiphany 1A: Baptism & Swimming in Grace

In his Baptism, Jesus is initiated into being the beloved of God and his ministry.

S1:E8 EPISODE SUMMARY

The Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by his cousin John the Baptist submerges Jesus into the quiet of the water only to emerge into bustle of the world with a declaration of who he and that he is beloved. This resets the world.

In The Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen, Nouwen explains we are always the beloved just as Jesus was always the beloved. What if we lived from this acceptance and love?

The Baptism of Jesus is mentioned in all four of the Gospels, highlighting its importance. Each portrays John the Baptist’s reluctance to baptize Jesus. Jesus grants John a position of authority and elevates him, reversing the expected power structure for the sake of righteousness.
